Birth of Ari {Hospital Birth | Fort Worth TX}

Ari's birth was extra special, his mom and I were college roommates turned best friends! I think I won the roommate lottery!

Ari's mom was simply amazing! She found her zone and focused her way through each contraction that came her way! Her husband and mom were right there with her the entire time. I can not say enough about how amazing and supportive her nurses and midwives (Acclaim Midwives) were throughout her labor! We are blessed to live in such a family centered care area.

Watching Katharine and Dex become parents was incredible! Thank you for trusting me with your precious memories!

Birth of Griffyn{Fort Worth Birth | Natural Birth}

Fast and Furious Natural Hospital birth!

When I found out Kaley was pregnant again I was over the moon. I photographed the birth of her first son back in 2014 and couldn’t wait to meet her new baby. Not only did they hire me for their birth but they would be my first repeat clients, how cool is that?!

After her long OP labor the first time, Kaley decided to hire a doula for her second birth. She hired Jamie Hinton, who is a Midwife and doula so she is seriously the best of both worlds.

Kaley texted me in the early afternoon to tell me she thought she might be in labor but wasn’t entirely sure since she was only 38 weeks. After a couple of hours her doula texted me and told me they were headed to the hospital to get checked out just in case because they lived an hour away. We decided it would probably be best to meet them there as Jamie felt labor was about to pick up.

When I arrived I found Kaley and Andrew in a room getting her BP tested. She was cracking jokes and smiling. She thought for sure she was in early labor if she was in labor at all. When the midwife arrived and checked her, she found that Kaley was already a 7. Kaley was in complete shock. It took 36 hrs to get to this point last time and it had only been 3 or 4.

Soon after, transition hit and contractions became intense and back to back. Her husband, mom and doula were such an amazing support team and kept encouraging her to keep going for the natural birth she had dreamed of.

Less than an hour after they arrived at the hospital it was time to push. After a couple pushes their second surprise son, Griffyn, was born. She got her natural birth she had longed for.

It was an honor to be invited back into Kaley’s birth space. She totally rocked it!!

Birth of Jetton {DFW Birth Photography | Mansfield Birth Photography | Hospital Birth }

{The Birth of Jetton from my point of view}

A few days before Jetton was born I was given the heads up that they had scheduled an induction for May 26th. Shay was already 4-5 cm so I double checked all of my gear just in case he decided to not wait until then.

When Induction day arrived Shay and Jacob arrived and got settled into the hospital and started pitocin. Contractions started strong and fast so I arrived soon after!

They worked seamlessly together. Jacob was such an amazing support for Shay as she labored through back to back contractions.

After a couple hours on pitocin contractions were getting more and more intense so they decided to get an epidural. L and D was swamped that morning so it took about an hour for the anesthesiologist to get there but Shay rocked it! Once he arrived so did sweet relief!

Soon after the rest of her family came to support her including their little girl! She was so excited to meet her baby brother.

As the morning went on everyone was having a good time laughing and chatting about reruns of The Reel. Their sweet little girl had fun playing with the peanut ball and playing hide and seek!

Shays labor progressed rather quickly and within 2 hours she as ready to push. She pushed for maybe 20 minutes and little Jetton was born!

 He was perfect! Shay seriously made pushing look easy!

When Cooper, their daughter, met Jetton for the first time she was completely smitten. Now there is something at every birth that pulls at my heart strings and seeing these siblings meet for the first time was definitely it. They were so sweet to watch! <3

The Birth of Karis {DFW Birth Photography| Edenway Birth Center}

The name Karis means grace and that is exactly how Hilari labored. She so gracefully took each contraction and I was in awe watching how much control she had over her labor. Jonathan was such an amazing support for her and her Edenway midwives didn't miss a beat! They knew what she needed the second she needed it. They prayed over their labor and birth and again once the sweet Karis was born. It was beautiful to be a part of such a spiritual birth. It was such an honor to help capture the birth of your beautiful daughter. Thank you!

Harper's mom worked so hard throughout her labor but sometimes babies have other plans and need a little help at the end. Blair remained strong and has a beautiful baby to show for it! Thank you for letting me be apart of your birth team! It was an honor to be a small part of Harper's birth-day!

Leilani Michelle's Birth Story- Part Two (Fort Worth| Hospital Birth)

-And so our birth story begins-

If you missed part one and would like some background click here :)

Austin had driven me to moxibustion the morning of January 9th, we came home had lunch and I was feeling pretty tired but didn't think anything of it (oh how our bodies try to tell us things). I got dressed in some ratty work clothes and we left to clean up a rental property.

On the drive over I felt a tight twinge in my belly but I thought I might just have an upset stomach. We arrived at the house at about 2:30 and I waddled out of the truck, walked in the door and GUSH! At first I thought I might have peed my pants and then I happened again, and again, and again.

I remember telling Austin “uhh I think we need to go somewhere” after I convinced him it was definitely not pee.

I called Brittany (doula) and Donna (midwife) and we headed to the birth center which was thankfully close. When we arrived we talked a bit and did the amniotic fluid test and of course it came back positive. Donna palpated my belly and asked if I could feel the contractions, I couldn't yet, and confirmed Lani was still breech.  I was completely shocked, scared and heartbroken. Not only was our birth not going to happen at all like we planned but baby girl was going to be 6 weeks early.

I remember my mom returning my phone call while I was at the birth center and I asked her what her plans were for the evening and I told her she should probably think about switching them because Lani was coming today! She was of course shocked and asked how I was doing. And it took everything in me to hold it together. Silly I know but I hate crying in public.

So we rush home gather things we think we might need and scurry to Harris Methodist in Fort Worth.  We checked into maternal observation around 5:30. At this point they checked me and I was at a 2. After that one of the UNT midwives, Lindsey, came in to talk to me and did a sonogram to check position and fluid levels. She confirmed a frank breech position with little to no fluid. So C-section it was going to be, a completely different birth that I dreamed of and built up in my head.

After she left contractions started to come more regularly but were not super strong. My parents, sister, sister-in-law and doula showed up about this time.

We were moved to labor and delivery and that is when contractions really started to come and I felt like I was burning alive and just kept sweating. Everyone helped me work through contractions and took photographs for me since our photographer couldn’t make it.  We used essential oils, guided breathing and fans! Oh how I loved the fans!

Around 9:30 they came to wheel me back, Austin kissed me and I just kept thinking this can’t be real.

I arrived in the OR and they began to prep me for surgery. They placed the spinal, which felt completely awful, draped me up and brought Austin and Brittany in around 10:00. Brittany stepped in and took pictures for us. So thankful for them too!

I told the OB and Midwife that I wanted to know everything that was happening! A few minutes pass and one of them says “Oh my goodness she is peeing on me!” Another minute passes and thenwe hear her cry and my heart just melted. Leilani was finally here! She had some strong lungs on her! We had planned to do a “family centered cesarean” but they said she needed some help. They brought her to my side of the drape and showed her to me from across the room. All I wanted to do was hold my baby.

They took her over to the NICU team standing by and worked on her for a little while, placed her on a cpap machine and then wheeled her in her isolette over to see Austin and I.

I touched her little fingers and just smiled at her. Then they wheeled her off to the NICU. They stitched me up and moved me back to my labor and delivery room.  Before they moved me to a postpartum room they wheeled me by the NICU and let me see Lani but wouldn’t let me hold her which completely broke my heart and made me rather angry.  We left the NICU and went to recovery and I began the every two hour pumping schedule.

The next day Austin wheeled me to the NICU and I FINALLY got to hold Leilani and it was the greatest moment of my life.

Leilani Michelle's Birth story! -Part One (Fort Worth| Hospital Birth)

In honor of Prematurity Awareness month I wanted to share my sweet Leilani’s birth story. While she is considered “late-term premature” because she was born at 34 weeks she still falls into the preemie category.

-Part one is all about my  pregnancy-

I found out I was pregnant Wednesday June 12th 2013, 4 days before Father’s day! (How sweet!)  While we had been trying we were surprised that it happened so quickly and were over the moon. Before my husband, Austin, and I even started trying to conceive we had discussed the type of birth we wanted and had both decided we would love to have a homebirth with a midwife! Yes, we are those people! :p

Anyways, once we got the big fat positive we looked around and interviewed Donna Miller. We immediately felt that she would be perfect for our birth team. Soon after we hired Donna we hired our doula, Brittany Hernandez, and birth photographer! And everything started to fall into place for our February 19th 2014 due date.

We went to all of our appointments together, I ate an extremely healthy diet (much better than I do now) continued to do yoga and saw a chiropractor almost every week.

We found out we were having a girl on our wedding anniversary! Everything was right on track and I was loving being pregnant! :)

At 30 weeks we decided it would be fun to take our parents to a 3D/4D sonogram and that is when we found out baby girl was frank breech. Although there was still plenty of time to turn I as kind of freaking out.

We went back a week later and she was still in the same position. I’m not going to lie I felt the sand slipping through my fingers and felt I was losing whatever “control” I had over my birth. I knew that frank babies are the easiest to breech to birth vaginally and the hardest to get to turn.

Christmas came and went and she was still breech.

32 weeks pregnant, baby girl, baby bump, premature baby, pregnancy, birth story

I tried everything I could to turn her; spinning babies, chiropractic care, moxibustion (for more information about moxibustion click here) and had decided to have an ECV (more info on ECV here) at 37 weeks if she was still breech. But 3 days after starting moxibustion and at 34 week pregnant my water spontaneously ruptured.

-And that is where her birth story begins, come back tomorrow to read more-
